Abstract

Have you ever wondered how the maps you see on the news are made? Want to make one yourself or learn a new skill to strengthen your research toolbox? Then come to the Mapping COVID-19 in QGIS special lecture!

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a powerful data analysis tool for investigating data spatially. This workshop will teach GIS fundamentals and techniques, enabling you to present COVID-19 data spatially in QGIS.

After this lecture, participants will be able to:

No prior knowledge or experience in GIS are expected. Absolute beginners are welcome!

About the Instructor

Mai Uchida specializes in data analysis, visualization, and design. She is passionate about integration of research fields via innovative computational methodologies and effective data story telling through design. She currently works at the Columbia Irving Medical Center to create and deliver innovative research and information management programs with an emphasis on data synthesis and analysis.

Mai has years of experience in ArcGIS, QGIS, and R and has trained many Columbia affiliates via workshops. In addition to her research experience, she has professional experience in designing posters, motion graphics, lecture videos, and web-based educational materials. She is also familiar with Python, JavaScript, html/css, and Adobe Creative Clouds products. She received an MPH in Epidemiology, a MS in Urban Planning with a concentration in Urban Analytics, and a BA in Political Science and Sustainable Development, all from Columbia University.
