DEVELOPMENTS IN PROGNOSTIC RESEARCH

Prognostic models are increasingly being published in medical journals. Interest in prognosis and prediction is growing by the increase in knowledge on biomarkers, genomics, and better imaging. Prognostic models combine a number of characteristics of a subject to predict an outcome, for example an underlying diagnosis or a prognostic event such as mortality. Multivariable regression models are often used.

In this talk, I will discuss several types of prognostic research questions, starting with:

I will focus on the use of external information in prognostic research. Specifically, I will consider the situation where published literature presents information on prognostic factors in an aggregated way (univariate regression coefficients) and how we might incorporate such external knowledge in a prognostic model. Various approaches will be considered, extending previous work.1
