Abstract
Nearly every data analysis should, at least, start with descriptive, exploratory analyses. Exploratory analysis serves several important functions; especially checking on data quality and helping investigators to choose the best inferential statistical procedures. Rather than simply being the first few segments of a course or a textbook in general statistics, the topics descriptive statistics should be integral parts of each and every phase of statistical investigation.
The workshop will show participants how to gain the most information from both univariate and multivariate data. Emphasis will be placed on the use of modern software for exploring and presenting both numeric and graphic data displays.
Instructor Biography
Bernard Gorman received his Ph.D. (1971) in Personality and Social Psychology from the City University of New York. His book, Design and Analysis of Single Case Research, with Ronald Franklin and David Allison, focuses on the intensive study of individuals over time.
Gorman is an Emeritus SUNY Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Nassau Community. He also holds an adjunct professorship in Hofstra University's doctoral program in Applied Industrial Organizational Psychology and Adelphi University's doctoral program in Clinical Psychology. At present, in his quite busy "retirement," he consults and collaborates in many research projects. He is co-investigator in the National Science Foundation grant, "Needed Math (NSF Award# 254800)," which explores the mathematics preparation and competencies of manufacturing technicians in the USA.
